On 26th January 61 friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar, travelled to the Alpujarras on a day trip.
First they travelled to Trevelez, driving through spectacular scenery with beautiful views of valleys covered in Cherry blossom and in contrast the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevadas. On arrival in Trevelez there was time to have breakfast and to visit the shops selling the air-cured hams for which this mountain village is famous.
The next stop was in Pampaneira, one of the three mountain villages of the Barranco Poqueira. Here they visited the workshop “Telares Mercedes”. They were warmly greeted on arrival and they were able to watch the owner, Mercedes Carrascosa, working on her loom making a beautiful woollen blanket. Mercedes, a world renowned weaver, has worked here for more than 30 years and the loom dates from the 18th century. They were also taken upstairs to see a smaller loom in operation and also to view all the wonderful products for sale, tapestries, handbags, shawls, blankets, rugs etc. Afterwards there was plenty of free time to visit the many shops selling ceramics, leather and clothes, and also to have lunch in one of the restaurants.
The third stop was in Capileira, the highest of the three villages in the Barranco with fantastic views of the Sierra Nevadas and down through the Poqueira gorge. Here there was time to take photographs and to look at more shops selling traditional Alpujarran products, including intricate basket work.
Finally a very brief stop was made in Bubion, again to marvel at the beautiful views of the gorge. The group then made their way back to the coast. Everyone was tired after a day in the clear mountain air but all agreed that it had been a wonderful day. We would like to thank everyone who supported the trip. Your support enables Lux Mundi to continue with its charitable work. We hope to see you all again soon.
