Prayer and Ecumenical Gatherings

A space for shared spirituality, dialogue, and prayer in unity.

Ecumenical Gatherings

Why do we pray together?

Prayer is the soul of the ecumenical movement” (Ut Unum Sint, 21).

Ecumenical prayer brings together Christians from different traditions who seek to move towards the unity Jesus desired:

That they may all be one” (John 17:21).

We do not aim for uniformity, but for communion in what is essential, always respecting the richness and diversity of each tradition. These gatherings take place on significant dates in the Christian calendar, moments that speak to all of us.

In praying together, we offer a visible sign of our desire to walk side by side, growing in communion, respect and hope. It is a shared witness of faith, where each tradition brings its gifts and all are enriched.

JANUARY / Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Every 18–25 January, Christians from different traditions across Málaga gather to pray together in churches throughout the province.
The highlight is the ecumenical service in Málaga Cathedral, usually on Saturday at 12 noon.
All are welcome to join and share in this visible sign of Christian unity.

MARCH / World Day of Prayer (WDP)

A global ecumenical movement led by Christian women. Each year, a different country prepares the liturgy and message, inviting all denominations to join in a united day of prayer.
It is a moment to hear women’s voices from around the world, pray with them and for them, and strengthen bonds of faith across cultures.

MARCH - APRIL / Agape (Holy Week)

One of Lux Mundi’s most cherished traditions, written by our founder Fr. Ramón Delius, S.J., as a gesture of unity and shared spirituality.
The prayer includes elements from the Jewish tradition and echoes the words of the Last Supper: “Love one another as I have loved you.”
More than a shared meal, the Agape is a moment of fellowship, remembrance and hope for all who believe in unity.

MAY - JUNE / Pentecost

At Pentecost we celebrate the Holy Spirit, who unites us as one body while giving diverse gifts for the common good.
Unity is not uniformity but harmony in our differences.
At Lux Mundi, this feast expresses our ecumenical commitment: to come together, guided by the same Spirit, and share the unique gifts each person brings.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER / Prayer for the Care of Creation

Season of Creation
An ecumenical moment to unite different Christian traditions in prayer and renew our commitment to caring for our common home.

This journey began in 1989, when the Orthodox Church proclaimed 1 September as the Day of Prayer for Creation. Over the years, other Churches embraced it, and the period was extended until 4 October, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, forming the Season of Creation.

In 2015, Pope Francis officially incorporated this celebration into the Catholic Church, making 1 September to 4 October a worldwide time of prayer and action for creation.

NOVEMBER / Annual Meeting of Churches

Each year, the Bishop of Málaga convenes this gathering as a sign of the Diocese’s commitment to Christian fraternity in our multicultural province.
Pastors, laypeople and representatives from different traditions meet to strengthen bonds, share experiences and plan ecumenical activities for the year ahead.
It is also a valuable informal space where pastors can connect personally, fostering the relationships that sustain true ecumenical unity.

DECEMBER / Ecumenical Christmas Celebration

Near Christmas, we gather with joy to celebrate the coming of the Messiah through prayer and song. Choirs and communities from different Christian traditions share how their cultures express the joy of Jesus’ birth.
Many voices and languages join in one praise, witnessing to our shared faith and the beauty of our diversity.
The celebration is held at Our Lady of Carmen and Santa Fe (Los Boliches) and Saint Andrew (Torre del Mar).
