A place for everyone

Lux Mundi is an Ecumenical Centre with locations in Fuengirola and Torre del Mar.
Rooted in the Christian faith and open to the world, it was born from a deep desire to build bridges between Christians of different traditions-Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Anglican.

Over time, Lux Mundi has grown into much more than a meeting place…

It is a space where faith, solidarity and friendship come together, no matter who you are, what you believe or where you come from. Here, there is always room for you.

Lux Mundi is not just a building but an inclusive spiritual centre where everyone can feel welcome, listened to and accompanied, without labels and without conditions. We foster unity, not through sameness, but through mutual respect, transforming diversity into a shared richness. Every person has something to offer, a role to play and a place within this living, caring community.

"It is a meeting place, a living community, where each person tries to be a practical witness of the faith we share. It is a place where you can work voluntarily for the good of all… A place where we discover that by helping others, we also help ourselves."

Our founder

Ecumenism in the Diocese of Málaga took shape more than fifty years ago through the vision of Father Ramón Delius Holdway, a Jesuit priest and the first Diocesan Delegate for Ecumenism and Interconfessional Relations. Convinced that Christian divisions could be healed, he devoted his life to fostering fellowship among the many non-Catholics arriving on the Costa del Sol.

Born in Hove (1921) to a family of English, German and Spanish heritage, he entered the Society of Jesus at a young age and was ordained in Granada in 1951. After serving in several communities, he was appointed Diocesan Delegate for Ecumenism in 1970 -a mission that became the heart of his ministry.

His dream was to create a permanent centre for prayer, encounter and service. With the support of the Society of Jesus, the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix- including his sister María- and lay Christians of different traditions, this dream became reality in December 1973 with the inauguration of Lux Mundi in Fuengirola.

Father Delius lived ecumenism with deep passion: strengthening bonds between Churches, forming seminarians, and serving actively in the Bishops’ Commission for Interconfessional Relations. Those who knew him recall his calm wisdom, generous love, firm yet gentle character and profound faith. A true visionary of the spirit of Vatican II, he even shaped the Lux Mundi logo, inspired by the Calaburras Lighthouse — a beacon of light for Málaga and the Mediterranean.

His motto:“To love, to pray together and to serve”continues to guide Lux Mundi today, illuminating every gesture of hospitality and every step toward Christian unity.

Our history

A Story with Deep Roots and Open Branches

Lux Mundi was born from a simple but powerful desire: to welcome, unite and serve. Its story began in 1969, when Jesuit priest Father Ramón E. Delius — the first Diocesan Delegate for Ecumenism in Málaga, recognised the need for a place where different Christian Churches could celebrate their services and support the growing international community on the Costa del Sol.

This vision took shape in December 1973 with the opening of the Ecumenical Centre Lux Mundi in Fuengirola. From the start, supported by the Society of Jesus and the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix, the centre became a vibrant meeting point for the many Christian Churches present in Málaga, promoting dialogue, spiritual accompaniment and practical help for residents and visitors.

In 1994, a second centre opened in Torre del Mar, extending this mission across the Axarquía region and remaining faithful to the Jesuit motto: “To love, to pray together and to serve.”

After Father Delius’ death in 1999, his work was continued by fellow Jesuit Father Rodrigo Ruiz Serrano, who guided the process through which, in 2003, Lux Mundi became a Diocesan Foundation, with the Diocese of Málaga and the Society of Jesus as its Trustees.

In 2014, the Diocesan Delegation for Ecumenism and the management of the Foundation formally became two distinct responsibilities. Gloria Uribe Cifuentes, connected to Lux Mundi since 1993, assumed the role of Director, committed to nurturing this ecumenical family ,today formed by more than 14 Christian Churches from across Europe, supported by a generous network of volunteers dedicated to helping those most in need.

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
