Trip to Casares

On the 23rd of February 53 friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar joined a coach excursion to the picture postcard village of Casares, which dates back to Phoenician and Moorish times.

On arrival the weather was rather inclement, so umbrellas were in order, but it didn´t last too long and did not deter Rosario the English speaking guide from continuing the tour through the narrow street of the village upwards to the Castle, where there are magnificent view of the village, the surrounding hillsides and mountains, but sadly due to the weather not Gibraltar and Africa.
Here in the ruins of the Castle is the Blas Infante Pérez de Vargas Cultural Centre, he is considered as “Father of the Andalusian Fatherland”.  The Centre is a reformed building of the 16th Century church “La Encarnation”, which was built above an Arabic mosque, complete with preserved minarets. The friends were able to see ancient documents and artefacts relating to the history of the town.  There was then free time for a coffee, or to visit other buildings in the town.
The friends rejoined the coach for the drive down to the coast along to Estepona, by this time the sun was shining and in Estepona there was free time for lunch and also visit the orchid house and other interesting monuments and sights in the town. It was then back to the coach for the homeward journey but all agreed it had been an enjoyable day.  Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar would like to thank everyone who supported the excursion, which enables them to continue with its charitable work and look forward to see you again at their various events and excursions.
