Half Orange visit to Astilleros Nereo, Boat Yard, Malaga

n the 23rd of May 2016 the “Half Orange” (widows, widowers and single group) of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar visited the Astilleros Nereo boatyard and eco-museum located on the Pedregalejo beach in Malaga.

The boatyard first started to build boats back in the mid- 20th century by the great grandfather of the present owner who carries on applying the ancient arts and carpentry to build the fishing smack or sardine boat, the “jábega”.  The friends were given a guided tour by a volunteer Carolina who explained the method of boat building and explained about the present commission ordered by the American town of San Augustin which they are building.  It is a replica of the brig “Galveston”, with which Mernardo de Gálvez beat the British in the naval battle of Penascola.  The eco-museum explains the maritime, heritage of Andalucía and reflects the way of life and work at sea from the viewpoint of those who were involved in these professions.  The museum also organises different programmes and activities to complement the normal visits by either groups or individuals.  The opening hours are Monday through Saturday 10.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 19.00 and contacted via www. astillerosnereo.es .  Tel: 952 291 198 or 650 078 483.  After the visit the friends strolled to the Baños del Carmen restaurant, which has been renovated, here they enjoyed an excellent lunch, next to the beach, watching the sea lapping on the sand.

The friends had a most enjoyable day out and welcome new friends to join them on Mondays, they meet the first Monday of every month at the Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar Centre at 12.45 when they have a bring and share lunch and at the Centre on the third Monday of the month.  On other Mondays of the month they meet at other venues either locally in Torre del Mar, Caleta, Algarrobo Costa or other venues if excursions have been organised.  We look forward to seeing you in the future.
